Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technology, It uses magnetic coils positioned beside the patient’s head to induce a magnetic field that in turn stimulates a specific part of the brain. TMS has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a safe and effective treatment for depression and migraines. Research is underway to examine whether TMS that targets different areas of the brain and uses different stimulation patterns can be a possible treatment for other conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, movement disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. Ongoing research also suggests that TMS has the potential to treat some core symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
